Databases
A good database design is critical to project success, including meeting project milestones later on. As with all design work, the most cost effective place to eliminate problems is as early in the project as possible. Problems that are allowed to move from Design into Implementation (or worse yet, Production) are costly to fix. Key to a good design is flexibility to extend and change the database with as small an effect as possible on other components. John has designed numerous databases, using tools like Erwin and Designer 2000. He tries to strike a balance between over specifying and leaving too much generic design in place to help avoid rework later in the project. In addition, he keeps an eye on the physical layout at all times, to avoid performance related surprises.
SQL is a complex language with many powerful features. Deciding which features to use, what tier to put them on, and how to make the code robust and supportable is crucial. Vendor additions to the SQL standards allow for boosts in productivity and performance at the expense of portability. John has many years of experience working with various databases and understands where to make the tradeoffs to achieve the best results.
- Performance Evaluation and Enhancement
"It's too slow" is a universal complaint. When the users complaining are your customers and the slowness is hurting business or productivity is down because of slow access times for your employees, you need to quickly find and fix performance bottlenecks. John's experience shows that performance can be increased by orders of magnitude by locating and fixing problem areas. The remedies can range from adding indexes, to relocating files, to changing the RAID level used on disks, to adding RAM.
